The Barbier-Mueller museum
Created by Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller in 1977, the Barbier-Mueller museum in Geneva houses the world’s biggest collection of items from tribal and classical antiquity, as well as sculptures, materials and ornaments from diverse cultures in Africa, Oceania, Asia and the Americas. SPG organises regular private visits to the museum for its clients and employees
Architecture and landscaping
The organisation of international architecture and landscaping competitions is a constant in our engagement for harmonious urban development.
The contemporary Amandolier garden, on route de Chêne 30, made its mark at European level by placing among the finalists in the prestigious European Garden Heritage Network for the 2013 European Garden Award. This international competition of exterior landscaping, launched on the initiative of Thierry Barbier-Mueller, was won by Parisian agency TER.
In the same spirit of architectural quality, the Saint-Georges Center project embodies a symbolic achievement in Geneva. Located in the Jonction area, this commercial building of about 8,500 m² was entirely demolished and reconstructed according to Minergie® standards. Completed in 2012, this building is the outcome of an international competition won by Berlin bureau Sauerbruch Hutton, in cooperation with Fabio Fossati Architectes. The competition was launched and coordinated by teams within the Real estate developments department of SPG.
More recently, in 2022, the Real estate developments department of SPG completed the rental project of Plateau de Frontenex, a residential complex of 156 housing units made with sustainable materials meeting THPE (very high energy performance) certification standards. Located in a wooded park, this ensemble stands out through the outdoor spaces devised by Michel Desvigne, a Parisian landscape architect of international repute. Over 200 birches were planted to provide a green setting for the residents.
The project also stands out through the integration of artworks by Barthélémy Toguo, Pablo Reinoso and Pol Quadens. A way of illustrating SPG’s engagement to combining controlled density, integration with the landscape and artistic expression.
Support for literary endeavour in Romandy
For ten consecutive years, the “Prix Littéraire SPG du premier roman romand”, initated by Thierry Barbier-Mueller in 2014, has selected a first work of fiction in French by an author from French-speaking Switzerland and published by a Swiss publishing house. Animated by freedom of spirit and a desire to engage, Thierry Barbier-Mueller is passionate about this project. In 2024, this award expanded towards new horizons with the launch of the “Prix SPG de la Création Littéraire”, which is for students. This prize is awarded annually to the three best pieces written by school pupils for their school-leaving certificate and comprises a CHF 700 grant; a means of propelling budding young authors towards writing and unearthing new talents.
